The Alaska Railroad has expanded its winter service for the fifth consecutive year, introducing new Thanksgiving trains and increasing departures across the seasonal schedule.
Weekend Aurora Winter Train service for winter 2018-19 began in mid-September and will continue through May 5. The route travels north from Anchorage to Fairbanks on Saturdays and returns to Anchorage on Sundays.
To accommodate Thanksgiving-week travelers, new midweek Aurora Winter Trains will run from Anchorage to Fairbanks on Tuesday, Nov. 20, and from Fairbanks back to Anchorage on Wednesday, Nov. 21. Other midweek departures are available from November through March, including select dates scheduled around the Christmas and New Year's holidays and the annual spring break season.
For the first time ever, the railroad will welcome spring break travelers with service on six days a week throughout March.
The Alaska Railroad is also accepting reservations for morning and afternoon holiday train excursions offered on three Saturdays in December. The 2.5-hour, roundtrip tours depart from Anchorage on Dec. 1, 8 and 15.
