John Kerry believes in an America where all Americans can afford the same health coverage our politicians in Washington have for themselves. And so long as we're not doing everything in our personal and collective power to solve them, we know the conscience of our nation cannot rest. So America will defend itself respectful of the sovereignty of nations and the rule of law. That is not how moral authority is claimed; that is how it is surrendered. The Holy Koran tells us, "O mankind! We have created you male and a female; and we have made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another."
I wanted to be part of something larger. We can pounce on some gaffe by a Hillary supporter as evidence that she's playing the race card, or we can speculate on whether white men will all flock to John McCain in the general election regardless of his policies. But we must also admit that programs alone can't replace parents; that government can't turn off the television and make a child do her homework; that fathers must take more responsibility for providing the love and guidance their children need. You make a big election about small things. If your hopes have been dashed again and again, then it's best to stop hoping, and settle for what you already know. So I have known Islam on three continents before coming to the region where it was first revealed.
And I think they recognized a part of themselves in me too. It's time for us to change America. Their actions are irreconcilable with the rights of human beings, the progress of nations, and with Islam.
Hope in the face of difficulty. That's why I stand here tonight.
And they, too, had big dreams for their daughter. The fact that so many people are surprised to hear that anger in some of Reverend Wright's sermons simply reminds us of the old truism that the most segregated hour in American life occurs on Sunday morning. Our government should work for us, not against us. If you don't, you'll be able to get the same kind of coverage that members of Congress give themselves. At this moment, in this election, we must pledge once more to march into the future. Likewise, it is important for Western countries to avoid impeding Muslim citizens from practicing religion as they see fit - for instance, by dictating what clothes a Muslim woman should wear.
