The bodies of two crew members of the Aqua Amazon were
recovered Monday after the Aqua Expeditions ship sank in Iquitos, Peru, on July
16, according to a statement from CEO Francesco Galli Zugaro.
Aqua Expeditions said on Saturday that “an accident occurred
that caused an explosion and resulted in the sinking of the ship.”
Three crew members and two external suppliers remain missing.
Also, 15 people were injured, eight of whom are in the hospital. Three are in
intensive care.
“We have been in close contact with their families and have
been keeping them fully informed of news of their loved ones during this
difficult time,” said Zugaro in a statement. “Many of the crew have been with
me from 2007 when we started. I considered them dear friends, not just employees.”
No passengers were aboard when the explosion occurred.
“The source of the fire and explosion is yet to be
determined as preliminary investigations are still underway,” Zugaro said. “We
are supporting all efforts by the authorities and will continue to do so
throughout the process.”
