Tortue Hamburg, featuring 114 bedrooms, eight suites and four long-stay apartments, opened this month in the German city.

Located in the emerging Stadthofe-Quartier of Hamburg, the Design Hotels property is near New Town, the Rathaus (City Hall), shopping districts and the Jungfernstieg passage into the city's Old Town district.

The hotel is housed in a six-story landmark building that dates back to 1888 and was the former headquarters of the city's Ministry for Urban Development.

A red-brick facade remains from the building's past life, and the interior has been restored and renovated by David Chipperfield Architects and Hamburg-based Stephen Williams Associates. Design elements include original 1910 frescos by Adrian Karbowsky, ornate columns, wrought-iron marquees, mosaic tiled flooring and tall arched windows.

The work of multiple designers, the property also features the French-German Brasserie and the pan-Asian Jin Gui restaurant as well as several bars and panoramic city views from the hotel's rooftop.
