For the first time since 9/11 changed the world of U.S.
airport security, non-flyers can meet and see family off at the gates of Seattle-Tacoma
Airport.
Through Dec. 14, individuals can also shop, dine or watch
planes take off and land by taking advantage of Sea-Tac's trial SEA Visitor Pass
Program.
"It's been 17 years since anyone without a ticket has
been able to enjoy areas of the airport beyond security. And yet some of the
airport's best features are there," Port of Seattle Commissioner Ryan
Calkins said in a statement. "Great restaurants, local musicians
performing in the concourses, and some of the best views of the planes coming
and going against the backdrop of Mount Rainier and the Olympics."
With the commencement of the trial program, Sea-Tac joins
Pittsburgh in offering airside access to non-passengers. Pittsburgh established
its MyPITpass program in September 2017.
To take advantage of the Seattle program, individuals must
apply online by 1:30 p.m. the day before their planned visit, then wait for TSA
approval. Notification from TSA will arrive by midnight.
The program is open to no more than 50 people per day and is
available only on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
At the end of the pilot period on Dec. 14, the Port of
Seattle will study the feasibility of making the visitor pass program
permanent.
