Hurricane
Earl made landfall near Belize City early Thursday as a Category 1 storm with
winds near 80 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Residents
in low-lying areas moved into shelters during the night.
Hotels
along Belize’s coast urged guests to stay in rooms. No guests were evacuated.
The international airport in Belize City is closed. The Belize Tourism
Board said that cruise ship calls were canceled for the rest of the week.
The
hurricane center said heavy rains would be a danger in southern Mexico through
Saturday as Earl moved through the Yucatan peninsula with heavy rains.
