Intrepid Travel has launched a trip in Kenya that offers travelers a rare insight into the work of wildlife rangers.
The eight-day expedition invites wildlife lovers into the risky and at times fatal world of those who protect our wildlife and wild places. The expedition includes a visit to the rhino sector at Chyulu Hills, where just eight wild black rhinos reside. These rhinos represent one of the last wild populations in Kenya, with most of the country's 600 black rhinos being kept in fenced sanctuaries to ensure their survival. It is rangers who do the critical work in conducting the research and monitoring required to help these endangered rhinos to thrive. Travelers will also spend time at the ranger training academy to learn what it takes to become a ranger and hear the true stories of what it takes to protect wildlife in Kenya.
In partnership with the Thin Green Line Foundation, a nonprofit organization, which looks after those on the frontline, the trip will take travelers behind the scenes on game drives and foot patrols with the rangers working in the area between Amboseli, Chyulu Hills and Kilimanjaro national parks.
Intrepid Group CEO James Thornton describes the expedition as combining the reality of the conservation frontline with an African wildlife adventure. He said: "The reality is that without these rangers, there is no one to look after our wildlife. And with 1,000 rangers losing their lives in the line of duty over the last decade alone, it's never been clearer that to protect our wildlife, we need to protect our rangers, too."
Travelers can book Intrepid's eight-day Kenya: Wildlife Rangers Expedition at $3,615 per person (excluding air). The first two departures will run in late July and mid-September next year, and for every traveler a donation will be made to the Thin Green Line to support wildlife rangers in Kenya.
