The Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger is hosting an outdoor gallery on its Terrace of Modern Art (TOMA) this summer.
The TOMA summer series brings in a variety of Hawaii-based artists to brighten up the area for the hotter months, and hosts parties with cocktails and live music.
The next 2018 TOMA series event is July 20, and is free and open to the public from 6 to 9 p.m. The venue, in conjunction with Aroma Caffe, will be donating 15% of all proceeds to AccesSurf Hawaii, a water-based nonprofit charity that offers a variety of programs for people with disabilities.
Featured artists for July include Matthew Allen, Nick Kuchar, Christine Shinn and Camille Izumi. Allen, the former art director of Surfer Magazine, focuses on ocean-based themes, working in a variety of mediums including photography, watercolor, pencil and ink. Kuchar, who earned a degree in industrial design and grew up surfing, produces playful, retro-styled travel prints capturing Hawaiian beach life. Shinn, an artist from Oahu's North Shore, specializes in graphic brushwork with bright colors. Izumi is a self-taught artist who works with pencil, crayon, and other formats but does most of her work with oils on a large scale, and many of her subjects are close friends and family.
"We are honored to be a part of such a unique art program and celebrate Hawaii's artists and art scene while bringing people together," said Jonathan Rotmensch, owner of Hawaiian Aroma Caffe, which sits adjacent to the Terrace of Modern Art.
The summer series is designed to support emerging and established Hawaii-based artists by showcasing their work in the heart of Waikiki. Each month a new artist or group of artists is featured.
