Puerto Plata could be getting a cruise terminal in 2020, according to the head of the port authority for the Dominican Republic.

In comments to the newspaper Listin Diario, Dominican Port Authority executive director Víctor Gomez Casanova said $125 million would be invested in the construction of a cruise terminal that would be shared by up to five cruise lines.

Gomez Casanova said the entire port will be rebuilt with a new dock for fishermen and transfer of the container yard to a new area.

He said the new terminal could service up to three ships simultaneously. A concession has been granted to a contractor to build the terminal. Previous trade reports have identified the contractor as Mexico's ITM Group, the developer of Puerto Costa Maya, south of Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

In 2016, Carnival Corp. opened its $85 million Amber Cove private port near Puerto Plata on the Dominican Republic's north coast.
