Norwegian Cruise Line has converted options for the fifth
and sixth Project Leonardo ships into firm orders for delivery in 2026 and
2027.
The ships will be built by Fincantieri. At 140,000 gross
tons and about 3,300 lower berths, the Leonardo ships will be smaller than the
latest Breakaway Plus newbuilds at 167,800 gross tons and 4,200 lower berths.
They will feature a distinctive inverted bow shape. A priority of the prototype design is energy
efficiency, with the aim of optimizing fuel consumption and reducing the impact
on the environment, Norwegian said.
The smaller footprint will broaden deployment opportunities
around the world, Norwegian said.
The first of the six Project Leonardo ships is scheduled for
delivery in 2022 at a cost of $851 million.
