Skiing in South Tyrol, Italy

Senior Editor Robert Silk traveled recently to South Tyrol in the Italian Alps. Formerly part of Austria, the 2,900-square-mile region is Italy's northernmost province but is still predominantly German speaking. The region is dotted with charming towns, highly rated hotels, remote mountaintop retreats and Michelin-starred restaurants. The Bolzano Archeological Museum houses the skeletal remains of Otzi The Iceman -- the oldest human remains in the world. The 5,300-year-old Otzi was preserved in glacier ice until discovered in South Tyrol in 1991. The museum also has this statue depicting what Otzi might have looked like.

The baroque cathedral of Bressanone was built in the mid 18th Century. Established around 900 A.D., Bressanone is the oldest town in South Tryol.

The Messner Mountain Museum sits sentinel atop the Kronplatz resort in the late afternoon shadows. The museum, two-thirds of which is below the mountain surface, tells the history of mountaineering. Its one of six museums in South Tyrol built by local son Reinhold Messner, who was the first person to climb all the world's 8,000-plus meter peaks.
