Scenes from the Big Island
The largest of the Hawaiian Islands, the Big Island is home to five volcanoes: Kohala (extinct), Mauna Kea (dormant), Hualalai (active, but not currently erupting), Mauna Loa (active, but quiet) and Kilauea (continuously erupting since 1983). The island is noted for its volcanic black-sand beaches, such as this strand at Punalu'u on the southeast coast.
