''Remember the Alamo!'' was the rallying call of Texans fighting Mexican troops for their independence after the fall of the fortress on March 6, 1836. Originally named Mission San Antonio de Valero, the adobe structure became the last stand for 189 defenders including Jim Bowie, William B. Travis and David Crockett. Far outnumbered, the defenders held off the onslaught of General Santa Ana's army of thousands for 13 days. Though the Alamo fell, it has risen as San Antonio's most famous historic site. In 1883, an investment group made up of local businessmen formed the San Antonio Brewing Association at what is now known as ''The Pearl.'' A newly married couple stands in front of the church at Mission San Jose, established in 1720. A $384 million improvement project completed in 2013 extended the San Antonio's famed River Walk to reach the San Antonio Mission's National Historical Park south of the city. The River Walk's Mission Reach is an eight-mile stretch with recreational trails, picnic areas and pavilions. The four Spanish colonial missions that make up the park -- Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan Capistrano, Mission Espada and Mission Concepcion -- were established in the 1700s by the Franciscan Order of the Catholic Church.
