At the invitation of the Iberostar Paseo de Gracia, destinations editor Eric Moya visited Barcelona as festivities were underway for the Roman Catholic feast holiday of La Merce. Pictured, Catalonia Square as seen from the hotel.

The La Merce opening parade with its trademark papier mache giants. Officially a city holiday since 1871, La Merce celebrations introduced the papier mache figures in 1902.

The entrance to Parque Guell, a public park designed by Antoni Gaudi and opened in 1926. In 1984 it was named a Unesco World Heritage site.

El Nacional houses four restaurants and four bars, offering a variety of Spanish culinary experiences under one roof.

Els Quatre Gats (The Four Cats), opened in 1897, was a popular hangout for Picasso and other artists of the day and remains a popular restaurant.

A seafood vendor at the La Boqueria market, which claims origins dating to the 13th century but officially opened in 1836 and became an indoor market in 1914.

Families take in a puppet show at the Parc de la Ciutadella.

A city view from Poble Espanyol, among the attractions built in 1929 for the Barcelona world's fair; today it houses a contemporary art museum, artisan workshops and various gift shops. In the background at left is Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, under contruction since 1882.
