What's New, What's Hot is Travel Weekly's look at useful and fun travel gadgets, edited by Joe Rosen. First up, the EyeTemp Home Protector device, which is designed to prevent disasters such as home fires and floods rather than just detect them after the fact. If it detects trouble, the device will alert you or nearby friends of the problem. According to the manufacturer, EyeTemp is made to monitor appliances such as stoves/cooktops, dryers, refrigerators and electrical heaters. Hawaii Island grew by more than 800 acres over the past few months as the long-active eruption at Kilauea suddenly intensified in May. Lava gushed from vents and fissures southeast of the crater, overtaking residential neighborhoods and flowing to the sea. Large fields of new lava rock were created, as well as a new black sand beach. While the volcanic activity dwindled in August, cruises to Hilo and Kona were temporarily suspended; it never affected other Hawaiian Islands such as Oahu and Maui. Now tourism leaders are trying to coax visitors back to see the changed landscape.

Carnival AirShip takes flight
The 2,918-passenger ship is due in November and will sail on Caribbean itineraries from Fort Lauderdale. It is the first of a new class of ship for Celebrity and as such is chock full of innovations, such as a moving exterior platform called the Magic Carpet and a multi-level dining and entertainment space called Eden. Craftsmen are using more plaster for the walls to get curved shapes and extra detailing in the design. The Edge is being built at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France.
