Location and History
This property is the most famous hotel in Rio de Janeiro, and for traditionalists, it is the best. Those expecting world-class service and impeccable maintenance and cuisine will not be disappointed.
This opulent beach palace, designed by the architect of the Negresco in Nice and commissioned by a wealthy Brazilian family, dates from 1923. Its grand carved white-marble facade is hard to miss, smack in the middle of Copacabana. In 1940, a second 10-story building was added, featuring art-deco architecture modeled after the grand style of Mediterranean hotels such as Carlton in Cannes.
