Location and History
This luxury boutique hotel was Nelson Mandela's primary place of residence 1992-98 and his first house in Johannesburg after he was released after 27 years in prison and after he returned from Robben Island.
Located in the leafy, upscale suburb of Houghton, Johannesburg, Sanctuary Mandela includes elements of the home "Madiba" (Mandela's clan name) lived in, as well as the unofficial presidential office. It was here that Madiba negotiated the multiparty talks that led to South Africa's end of apartheid and rebirth of democracy.
